BOB’s BLOG: Game #1 reminded me of…

Boise State had a great first game in Louisiana.  It reminded me of the bowl game.  The offense scored quickly and the defense never let the opponent do anything.

Coach Harsin’s offense looks like it has quite a few more weapons to work with this season.  Cedrick Wilson should have a breakout year at receiver.  Alec Dhaenens looks like he has improved a lot at catching the ball and freshman running back Alexander Mattison should be a solid back up for Jeremy McNichols. Those weapons don’t count McNichols, quarterback Brett Rypien, and receiver Thomas Sperbeck.

The Bronco defense had a lot more question marks heading in 2016, but so far so good.  The new defensive line showed well stopping Louisiana’s running back Elijah McGuire and quarterback Anthony Jennings…however, this week will be a different challenge.  Last week they stopped a ground based attack.  This week against Washington State, they’ll have to try and hurry Cougar qb Luke Falk.  They need to make it uncomfortable from him to throw.  Last week EWU didn’t, as Falk completed nearly 80 percent of his passes.

Same can be said for the secondary.  With three new starters, they did a nice job of keeping receivers in front of them and not allowing the big play.  They communicated well and had a good first game.  But game two, they’ll have to cover five receivers on every play and face one of the top 20 quarterbacks in the country.  We’ll know a whole lot more next Sunday than we do today about the Bronco defense.
