On today's Bob and Murph Show we are going to talk about MVP's. Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder was picked nearly unanimously this year over Lebron James this season. We are going to talk about MVP's and the criteria for it in the different sports. I think in baseball, how your team does matters the least. It is all about individual numbers and how impressive they are. In basketball, maybe because there are only five on the court, what your team does matters more. Players are judged by scoring, rebounding, assists, and can they get their team a ring.
In football that is starting to matter for quarterbacks. Dan Marino may have better numbers than Joe Montana, but Joe won Super Bowls. It is also is almost impossible for a non-quarterback to win the MVP. In baseball, the MVP can really come from any position. Pitchers some times are at disadvantage, but in all reality the Cy Young goes to the most valuable pitcher. The baseball season is only a month out and we really have no idea who will be the MVPs. In basketball, everyone knew from game one of the regular season, that it would be between James and Durant. Barring injury, I would expect those two to share the award for the next five or six years. Next year's NFL MVP will go to the quarterback with the best numbers on a really good team.
Taking the MVP a step further and looking to the Hall of Fame, Karl Malone, John Stockton, and Charles Barkley's careers would be judged better if they led their teams to championships. In football, only really the quarterbacks are held to that standard. In baseball, if you read the plaques, individual stats would come way before any mention of championships. The only player that might be an exception is Reggie Jackson. Playing on title teams in Oakland and New York gave him the stage to become Mr. October.
Football, basketball and baseball are all very different and the discussion about what makes MVP's and Hall of Famers is slightly different in all three.
