I realize the Boise State fan base has grown by 50-100% since 1999. In the last 18 years, Boise State has won 9 conference championships, 3 Fiesta Bowls and had 8 0 or 1 loss teams. That generates global buzz.
That’s a lot of recent history. So, if you are 25 years old you really haven’t watched them do anything but win. But if you are over 25, you have seen much worse football at times.
And, there is value in looking back at where you came from to appreciate where you are and put a plan together to get you back on track. I read fans saying they are done with Boise State football until a new coach is hired. Or, they start winning.
That’s too bad because this is when the program will need the most support not the least.
I think the program can be tore down 2x as fast as it took to build it up. I understand people want to vent and feel important. It’s natural. It’s okay.
Just don’t think you are so special. That you are entitled to a Fiesta Bowl trip or party at your house to watch a big bowl. Every great program goes through dark times and the greatest come back to win big. Things are never as bad as you think and the best programs, like Boise State, will turn it around.
I think we need to be reminded of this. USC, Alabama and Notre Dame seems like winners don’t they?
They haven’t always had it that way. Nor has Boise State.
Fact: Boise State lost 56 games from 1983-1993. They have lost 24 games from 2007-2017. And won 3 Fiesta Bowls!
Fact: Bryan Harsin has won 33 games in 44 tries. They have gone 5-5 their last 10 games.
Fact: Chris Petersen’s last team in 2013 went 6-4 his last 10 games including the Hawaii bowl loss to Oregon State.
Fact: Alabama lost 61x from 1997-2007. They came back.
Fact: USC lost 58x from 1991-2001. They have won 7 Rose and Orange Bowls since.
Fact: USC lost to Stanford at home in 2009, 55-21. Worse loss in 43 years.
Fact: Notre Dame lost 59x from 2001-2011. They have gone to a National Championship and Fiesta Bowl since and almost averaged 9 wins per season.
So, yes the team is losing. They could lose more.
No, it’s not acceptable.
Just don’t think it is that unusual. They will be back.
