What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think Boise State Football?
Offense?
Trick plays?
Blue Turf?
Run Game? Bingo!
Run Game. Pounding the rock. 10 straight seasons of having a 1,000 yard running back. Alexander Mattison wrote his name in the record books again with a 145 yard night in the 45-14 win over New Mexico. Mattison has now rushed for 1,015 yards on the season and still has 3 games to go. He could finish with 1315 yards and ,if he does, Boise State could finish 13-2. I can remember Coach Pete, opposing coaches and national announcers all pointing out how content Boise State was to play big boy football. Boise State would line up with 2 tight ends, 2 running backs and just pound the defense. They still run the ball as often but not as consistently dominant. But, it is improving. And for as good as this streak of running backs has been, the offensive lineman have been just as impressive. Mattison, McNichols, Ajayi, Harper, Martin, and Avery have all gained at least 1,000 yards in the last 10 seasons. But, Woodruff, Potter, Leno, Odhiambo, Cleveland, Henry and Hampton all deserve credit as well. Auburn, Wisconsin and Boise State are the only 3 schools in the last few years who have had a long streak of 1,000 yard rushers.
Think about that.
The school known for blue turf and Statue of Liberty plays is also the Dirt Dog. The squad that has o lineman willing to root, hog or DIE. And, has punishing backs like Martin, Ajayi and Mattison. Hopefully, Mattison returns for his senior season to take some pressure off a new QB but if not, bring on Van Buren, Mahone, Duncan or Holani. Run Bronco Run.
