Good News: The Colorado State defensive secondary was leaky at best in their embarrassing home loss to Hawaii 43-34. CSU trailed 37-7 with 3:35 to go in the 3rd quarter. They had allowed 375 yards passing by that time. The Rams defense gave up 3 TD passes, 26 receptions for 418 yards and only had 1 sack. They also allowed 200 yards rushing. New defensive coordinator John Jancek, who was DC at Tennessee ’13-’15, had better find some answers up front or in the backfield because the Rams have Colorado, Arkansas and Florida next! Lucky for CSU they have Illinois State, San Jose St., and New Mexico for visiting Boise 10/19…Boise State showed good recruiting judgement when they went after former Washington Qb K.J. Carta-Samuels. He went 34-50 for 537 yards, 5 TD’s and only 1 interception…Wyoming methodically beat New Mexico State 29-7. The Wyoming offense showed no interest in throwing the ball as new Qb Tyler Vander Waal went 13-22 for only 137 yards. Wyoming had 4 three and out series in the first half and doesn’t seem to have the deep game play action ala last year with Josh Allen. They did run the ball though 57x. That can make for a one dimensional team if they don’t loosen up on Vander Waal…
Bad News: K.J Carta-Samuels. The CSU Qb will only get better as the season continues and if the Boise State defense has an off night, he can keep CSU in a high scoring game. That’s a lot of pressure on the BSU offense. CSU may also have found another NFL wide receiver in Preston Williams. Former Rams Wr’s Rashard Higgins and Michael Gallup went in the 5th and 3rd round in the NFL draft the last 2 years. Williams is a 6’4” 210 DUDE from Georgia who went to Tennessee out of high school for 2 years, transferred to CSU, sat out a year, got suspended for an assault charge and now has 2 years to go. I now see why Bobo put up with him. He caught 9 balls for 188 yards and 2 Td’s. TROUBLE…The Wyoming defense was supposed to be among the best in the MWC this year. New Mexico State lost all their play makers on offense off last year’s miracle 6-6 bowl team. So, MAYBE it is no surprise that Wyoming’s defense allowed -9 yards rushing and pretty much threw a shutout on NMSU. The Aggies had 8 yards of offense at the half and didn’t cross the 50 until a few minutes to go in the game. Also, WYO RB Nico Evans ran wild for 190 yards and 2 TD’s. He’s a 5’9” 211 yard bowling ball that goes downhill…
