I am not taking it lightly that Oregon State has not named a Head Coach to replace Gary Anderson. What is Oregon State Athletic Director Scott Barnes waiting for?
It’s obvious to me.
He is waiting for a Head Coach to be done with his season. If Barnes was going to give the job to his interim or Beau Baldwin from Cal, why wait? Precious recruiting time is wasting. Some think they want to name a coach on December 3rd.
THE DAY AFTER CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Hello!
Scott Barnes has watched Boise State as an AD at Eastern Washington, Washington and Utah State from 1999-2015. He is well aware of Boise State and Bryan Harsin. He is now at Oregon State and has a big decision to make.
The hire makes financial sense.
OSU saved a bunch of money with the way Gary Anderson went out. He basically left $12 million on the table. Harsin has a modest buy out at Boise State. He can be had for as little as $500,000.
It seems like the time is ripe. That is a drop in the bucket for Power 5 schools.
Would Harsin leave Boise State for Oregon State?
Why not?
Especially if he is making $3-4 million a year for 5 years. $15-20 million has a way of convincing coaches they can make a difference.
And, you can win at Oregon State. Between 2006-2012, Oregon State won 8 or more games 5 times.
That’s plenty.
And, Oregon is not on fire anymore and the state seems up for grabs. Harsin can control the media in Corvallis and call the shots. All good points. The Group of 5 jobs like Boise State are going in the wrong direction. Attendance, tv money and football budgets are declining. Hell, the $12 million UCLA used to buy out Jim Mora is more then the entire Boise State football budget.
Where would Boise State turn to replace Harsin? I am sure that Mike Sanford of Western Kentucky would get a look as would maybe former Oregon Head Coach Mark Helfrich.
But, I would hire current Defensive Coordinator Andy Avalos.
He has the heart and soul of this team. He is ready and has the complete backing of this entire program.
But, all of this is premature.
The Boise State job is Harsin’s as long as he wants it. But, when he doesn’t , I think I know a guy who does.
