I have always thought watching the Spring Game is a lot like watching a play. You don’t get to see the rehearsals and only get to the see the production. So you really only can evaluate what you see the night of the show. With that being said, here are a few of my takes from Saturday’s scrimmage.
The unit I was most impressed with was the secondary. I think they all played well. Returning starter Tyler Horton is going to be very good at one corner and I think the Broncos have two others – Michael Young, the JC transfer, and Reid Harrison-Ducross, who played last year as a true freshman – to compliment Horton. The safeties, while not as big as some in years past, look good too. DeAndre Pierce and Kekoa Nawahine played quite bit as freshman and both made some nice plays on Saturday. Redshirt freshman nickel Avery Williams had the game’s only turnover – an interception of Brett Rypien – and could have had another.
Two other defensive players that jumped out at me were a pair of redshirt freshmen – defensive end Curtis Weaver and linebacker Desmond Williams. I think one or both will be breakout players this season.
Backup quarterback Jake Constantine showed me a lot more than I expected and based on the reps looks to be the number two. The receivers showed me less than I expected. I think they have a ways to go this summer and hopefully can develop chemistry with Brett Rypien in the player run practices. If I had to guess based on the little I’ve seen, I think sophomore Bryan Jefferson is my choice in that group along with Sean Modster to emerge.
And the tight ends will clearly be a bigger part of the offense. Even with Jake Roh injuring his ankle early, the position caught almost one-third of the passes – 10 of 33.
We will talk about our impressions of the spring game today at 1 on Idaho Sports Talk. I’d love to hear yours.
