Play Ball!

The baseball season isn't a week old and I think this year is going to be defined by injuries.  The Braves, generally a contender, have two of their starting pitchers out with Tommy John surgery.  The Dodgers Clayton Kershaw is out for now with a back injury.  The quickest way to derail a season in any sport is to get the wrong people hurt.

Replay is also going to be a major topic.  If the idea is to get the calls right, I think people are going to tire of the new system.  Certain calls can be overturned, but only if you haven't used your challenge.  It seems kind of silly to me that only some calls will be corrected.

I always loved the football stat that said over 50% of the teams that made the playoffs started 2-0 and very few made it with 0-2 starts.  Seven teams started the year 2-0 and six started 0-2.  If that held true in baseball teams like the Mariners, Astros, and White Sox would be in great position.  The Yankees have started 0-2…with both losses to the Astros.

Amazing how you can get excited about your team after just a few games.  I have watched all three Giants games and am excited about three guys.  Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Tim Hudson.  Belt looks like he has improved.  Hudson pitched magnificently last night.  But really how much can be decided based upon three games.  Pablo Sandoval, even though he has lost a ton of weight, was shaky in the field.  I think it is easier to become disenchanted with your team early.  You know your teams problems and get more down on them than a a hot start that might be viewed as a fluke.  For the first time since 1965, both the Mets and Yankees are 0-2.  Bet the tabloids are having a field day.  Think it is not a surprise to most (GM Sandy Alderson said the Mets would win 90) that the Mets aren't good…but could the Yankees miss the playoffs again?

Baseball is a marathon.  Winning one football game is like winning 10 straight in baseball.  When the A's won 20 in a row in 2002 to set the American League record that would be like winning two NFL games in a row.  The best teams lose 60.  The worst teams win 60.  That means only 42 games really decide things?  But which 42?  A win in April is just as valuable as a win in September.  When you look back at a team that doesn't make the playoffs it is usually because they had trouble against some bottom feeder and the teams that made the playoffs didn't. (Yankees?)

I am against interleague play for a lot of reasons, but giving teams different opponents during the season just doesn't seem right….but that is a topic for another day.
